Elder Care Cost Comparison Calculator

Warm illustration of a daughter sitting with her elderly mother

Nobody plans for the day Mom or Dad starts needing help. Then it arrives — fast — and the decisions can’t wait. Home care bills by the hour. Assisted living by the month. Nursing homes by the day. And caring for them yourself? It only looks free until you count the lost income and the lost sleep. This free calculator puts all four options on the same monthly, annual, and 5-year footing, with cost growth built in — so you see the long road, not just this month’s bill. A quality-of-life scorecard honors what money can’t measure, weighted by what matters most to your family. Starting figures use published national medians — real quotes from your area will serve you better. Your numbers stay in your browser. Always.

+  New here? The 30-second version

Every option gets boiled down to two numbers: its true 5-year cost (with yearly price increases) and a quality-of-life score based on what your family values. Cost alone rarely decides — this shows both.

Answer 5 questions and we’ll do the math. National medians are used as starting estimates; replace them with your real quotes.

Your results

5-year total = yearly cost grown by your yearly increase %, plus one-time costs. Score = weighted average out of 5.

Common questions

Is this elder care calculator free?

Yes — free, in your browser, no signup.

How much does elder care cost per month?

It varies a lot by state and by how much care is needed. Rough 2025 national medians: about $6,800/month for full-time home care, $5,350/month for assisted living, and $9,200/month for a nursing home semi-private room. Your area may differ — plug in local quotes for numbers you can trust.

Is home care or assisted living cheaper?

It comes down to hours. A few hours a week at home usually wins. Past about 40 hours a week, assisted living often costs less. The calculator finds your family’s crossover point.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere. Everything stays in your browser. Nothing uploaded, tracked, or shared.

Is this financial or legal advice?

No. It’s a planning aid — not legal or financial advice. For Medicaid planning, powers of attorney, or contracts, please talk to an elder-law attorney.
